Blacktail Deer Creek Trail Details

This popular day hike follows the lower segment of Blacktail Deer Creek as it flows through sunny, open meadows into a slowly deepening and narrowing valley that will later become Black Canyon. The trail uses a number of quick switchbacks as it descends 1,100 feet to intersect the Yellowstone River Trail, but is otherwise a moderately easy, well maintained trail. Experiencing both grassy, open terrain and mountainous, rocky, canyon scenery, this trail provides a healthy sampling of different park habitats, as well as opportunities to see bison, elk, deer, and pronghorn along the trail. Trailhead: 7 miles (11.3 km) east of Mammoth on Mammoth-Tower Road
