Rescue Creek Trail Details

Leaving Blacktail Creek Trail and following Rescue Creek upstream, this picturesque trail wanders over gently rolling grassy trails before beginning a constant descent through sagebrush, aspen, Douglas fir, and early wildflowers, including the pink and yellow prickly pear cactus. The creek, which was erroneously named for the rescue of Truman Everts, a hiker who was separated from his group and lost for 37 days, feeds into a number of small ponds where large waterfowl are often seen. The trail offers good views of Turkey Pen Peak and Rattlesnake Butte, as well as habitats for elk, pronghorn sheep, coyote, and rattlesnakes, most of which are seen during the spring and fall months. Trailhead: 7 miles (11.3 km) east of Mammoth on Mammoth-Tower Road; ends 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the North Entrance Station
