Government Canyon State Natural Area Details
Unlike other parks in Texas, this area is strictly reserved for preserving the natural habitat of the area. While there is still an abundance of activities to participate in, the biggest draw is 12,000 acres of sheer natural beauty, with rugged hills, marshy ponds, and sweeping canyon vistas. Before humans inhabited the land, this area in Bexar County was once ruled by dinosaurs. You can still see their massive footprints by walking the Dinosaur Track Trail. Archeologists believe the prints are from Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidon that lived over 110 million years ago. There are a few campsites and some nature trails that will get you up close and personal with the park's wide variety of flora and fauna. If you're lucky, you might be able to spot two rare and endangered bird species - the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo. Entrance Fees - Adult: $6 Daily - Child 12 Years and Under: Free Reservations are available [online] (https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/government-canyon-state-natural-area/r/facilityDetails.do?contractCode=TX&parkId=1200058&_ga=2.33437883.447085507.1618845916-917412064.1616861417) or by calling (512) 389-8900
