Pineland Public Land Details

Pineland Public Land is now 600 acres of trails and forests, previously though, it was a working farm and school with a controversial history. First opened in 1908, the Maine School for the Feeble-Minded was home to local Maine residents without the mental capacity to care for or school themselves. Though small, at one point the school was caring for around 1,500 people. The farm was established here for residents to work and to support the enterprise. After over a century of being open though, the school closed its doors due to degraded assistance to the disabled and is now an outdoor recreation area.
