Katahdin Iron Works State Historic Site Details
Katahdin was a small railroad town of nothing more than a station, a 100 room hotel, an ironworks, and the few who worked there. Unfortunately, despite the location and set up, the iron deposits in the region were of poor quality and often needed continued refining to create a better product. Even with the high demand for iron during the Civil War, the region struggled, and production did not last. Today, only one kiln and the surrounding protected forests, waterfalls, and valleys are all that is left of the Katahdin Iron Works.
