Fort Halifax State Historic Site Details
During the French Indian War, the British built three major forts to control waterways to the ocean, Fort Halifax was one such fort constructed in 1754. As an original wooden structure, the years spent in nature took their toll, and in 1987 a flood swept away the remaining blockhouse. After recovering the old timbers though, it was reconstructed the next year and remade for future visitors to enjoy. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest blockhouse in the nation.
