Pipestone Details
Pipestone: Travel along the Pipestone River into Pipestone Valley along this aptly-named trail - Pipestone. A well-defined gravel and dirt trail, Pipestone climbs 165 meters (541 feet) along the Pipestone River into the Pipestone Valley, north of Lake Louise. Along the way, watch for horses - the trail is popular with horseback riders - and bears. Once you reach the 7.2 kilometer (4.5 mile) mark, it's time to turnaround; bicyclists aren't permitted beyond this point. If you'd like to add to your ride, take the sometimes-muddy 800 meter (0.5 mile) side trail near the trailhead to Mud Lake. Trail guides and cycling maps are available, and be sure to follow the park's rules and regulations to make the most of your ride: be bear aware; ride on designated trails; avoid riding during extreme conditions; help preserve the trails' quality; know your limits; yield to other riders; and, of course, leave no trace. **Trail Type:** Out and Back **Difficulty:** Moderate **Distance:** 14.4 kilometers round trip (8.9 miles) **Trailhead:** Turn off of Trans-Canada Highway 1.5 kilometers (0.9 mile) west of Lake Louise, on Slate Road
