Lake Minnewanka Details
Lake Minnewanka or "Minn-waki" (Lake of Spirits) is located 11km outside of Banff on the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive. Named by the indigenous Stoney-Nakoda people, the lake has served as a gathering spot for 100 centuries. The glacial lake, fed by the Cascade River, is 21 kilometers long and reaches up to 142 meters deep at points. You can explore the lake by rental boat, either an aluminum skiff or pedal boat, or bring your own canoe, kayak or small power boat to launch at the public landing. You can rent the pedal boats and motor boats from Brewster's right on the lake. You can hop aboard a scenic boat cruise if you prefer to kick back and relay. They guided tours depart daily from Devil's Gap (May to September). If you want to fish here, plan on brining your own rod or hitch up with a local guide from Banff to learn the secret tips. In the lake, (and if you're lucky) you'll find both whitefish and lake trout. In addition to all the activities, you will also find restrooms, a snack bar, plenty of parking, and a boat ramp (and parking for trailers) at the lake.
