Lake Minnewanka Details
When you start riding the Lake Minnewanka mountain bike trail, you may wonder why it's rated difficult, what with its gentle start. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, the physical demands set in, requiring excellent fitness, bike handling skills and preparation - the trail gets very remote. You'll start climbing the challenging trail out of Stewart Canyon, occasionally coming across exposed sidehills, and follow the single track towards Banff National Park's boundaries at Devil's Gap. Destinations along the way include Aylmer Pass Junction and Warden's Cabin. Before heading out on your ride, you'll want to prepare: the trail is very popular with hikers, and it's suggested that mountain bikers get an early, weekday start if riding in May, June, September and October. You'll also want to note that the Lake Minnewanka trail is closed to mountain bikers July 10 - September 15. Trail guides and cycling maps are available, and be sure to follow the park's rules and regulations to make the most of your ride: be bear aware; ride on designated trails; avoid riding during extreme conditions; help preserve the trails' quality; know your limits; yield to other riders; and, of course, leave no trace. **Trail Type:** Out and Back **Difficulty:** Difficult **Distance:** 49.8 kilometers round trip (31 miles) **Trailhead:** Lake Minnewanka day-use area, kiosk at far end of picnic area
