Loweswater Corpse Road Details
A Corpse Road is every bit as morbid as it sounds: these are ancient paths that mourners followed on their way to bury the dead. The National Trust walk along the Corpse Road in Loweswater begins at a gate across from the parking lot at Maggie's Bridge; the path leads first to High Nook Farm, then High Nook Tarn. The path to the right of the lake is the old Corpse Road leading from Buttermere to Lamplugh church and St. Bees Priory. A gate will lead you into the forest and to the Holme Force waterfall and over a stone arch bridge spanning Holme Beck. Once you reach the Loweswater lakeshore look for a rectangular platform, the remains of an anti-seaplane cable that stretched across the lake during World War 2. Follow the lakeshore and cross the meadows back to Maggie's Bridge.
