Chaos Crags and Crags Lake Trail Details
The Chaos Crags Trail takes you to Crags Lake and up and over some of the steepest terrain in Lassen Volcanic National Park for a four mile roundtrip hike. Start at the Manzanita Campground and through forests of white fir and Jeffrey pine. Cross a shaded stream at .6 miles into the trail; this is when you will begin to ascend. You'll be able to see the Chaos Crags and Crags Lake 1.9 miles into the trail. From here, you can descend easily through talus and scree to the shores of Crags Lake. When there's heavy snowfall, the lake can be full, but some years it can dry up by early summer. In the north, you'll be able to see the Chaos Jumbles, an avalanche debris field from the Chaos Crags. You'll also have views of the Hat Creek Valley as well as the Thousand Lakes Wilderness. It's beautifully barren up here, with trees dotting the landscape between the craggy rocks. Bring your camera.
