Sportsman Lake Trail Details
One of the longest trails in the northwestern high country, this serious backpacking trail experiences a vast array of scenery and wildlife along its slow journey to Sportsman Lake. Beginning near Gallatin River, the trail follows Specimen Creek and a number of other small streams, before skirting the south side of Electric Peak to meet Gardner River. Although quite long, the trail remains mostly level, traveling trough open plateaus and sagebrush meadows until Electric Peak, where grade becomes quite steep. The proximity to the peak also provides a great opportunity to climb the highest peak in the Gallatin Range, measuring about 10,970 feet. This trail is very popular among hikers and anglers alike, because of the high number of good fishing spots in the streams along the trail, and Sportsman Lake, which is known for the cutthroat trout that inhabit it.
