Nez Perce Ford is a spot on the Yellowstone River where the Nez Perce Indians crossed the river during their flight through the park in 1877 in an attempt to escape the U.S. Army. The Nez Perce Ford Picnic Area is located at the spot today. The crossing has also been known as Buffalo Ford after rangers found bison frozen in the ice here in 1946, as well as Chief Joseph's Crossing in deference to the Nez Perce's leader at the time. In 1981, the park's naming committee designated Nez Perce Ford as its official name. Tables: 17 Restrooms: 1* Fire Grates: 0 * Wheelchair Accessible.
