Mud Volcano Self-Guiding Trail Details

Undoubtedly the dirtiest part of the park, this area features a number of active thermal features, including extremely hot mud pots, fissures, and craters, all of which give off a lovely, but really terrible sulphurous smell. This loop trail follows a series of boardwalks through muddy pools, the largest and most famous of which is the trail's namesake, Mud Volcano. The 30-foot crater once flung mud over 30 feet into the air, although its eruptions have since diminished. Other pools, springs, and vents are visible along the hillsides, and are surrounded by strangely colored plants that are struggling to survive in such a hard environment. Ranger-guided walks are available to see some of the stranger area sights not open to the public.
