Central Basin Details
The central basin is the low-lying area occupied primarily by Yellowstone Lake. An ancient collapse of the Yellowstone caldera formed this depression. The lake itself was once 200 feet higher and covered more of the basin. Two miles below the basin lies the magma chamber that provides the heat powering all of the park's geothermal features.
