Black Bears Details
Black bears are one of Yellowstone National Park's most deadly animals, along with grizzly bears. Although bear attacks do happen, black bears tend to stay away from humans, so sightings are fairly rare. Unlike larger grizzlies, black bears rarely attack unless seriously provoked, but they should still be treated as an extreme threat to hiker safety. They are most often seen along highways around Mammoth, Tower, Madison, and Canyon areas, as well as in backcountry areas.
