Bicylcing Details
Touring in Yellowstone National Park can be a rewarding way to see the park's features from a different perspective. There are about 300 miles of road open to cyclists, and stretches between developed areas can be very long. Road elevations ranges from 5,300 to 8,900 feet, and elevations can change dramatically between points. All cyclists must obey the same rules as motorized vehicles, and are strictly prohibited in backcountry areas or along service roads. Cyclists must also use appropriate lighting during rain, fog, or other periods of low visibility. After the roads close to motorized vehicles in November, most roads remain open while park employees are preparing them for winter use. Cyclists are permitted on sections of the Grand Loop Road, including Mammoth Hot Springs to West Yellowstone, and Madison Junction to Old Faithful, among others. Riding is still relatively weather dependant, and conditions can be unpredictable. There are very few services available during this time, and cyclists need to be prepared to care for their own needs, including encounters with wild animals. Remember that cell phones have very poor reception in this area, and ranger services are very limited! Entrance fees are still charged at the North Entrance, which is the only open entrance during this time.
