Visiting with Pets: Rules & Guidelines Details

Bringing your pet to the park can make for an unforgettable adventure, but responsible pet ownership is key to keeping both your furry companion and the park's wildlife safe. Pets must always be on a leash no longer than six feet to prevent them from wandering off, encountering hazards like steep cliffs or venomous snakes, and disturbing the park's natural environment. As a pet owner, it's also your responsibility to clean up after your pet-be sure to carry waste bags and dispose of them properly in designated trash bins to help keep the park pristine. While pets are welcome on all trails, they are not allowed inside visitor centers or at ranger-led programs. Service animals, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), are an exception and may accompany their owners in all areas of the park. Since natural water sources in the gorge may contain harmful bacteria, carrying extra water for your pet is essential. Be mindful of the weather, as hot summer days and rugged trails can be tough on pets-take breaks in shaded areas and check their paws for signs of wear. Leaving pets unattended, especially in vehicles, is strongly discouraged. Even on mild days, temperatures inside a car can rise quickly, putting animals at serious risk. By following these simple guidelines-keeping your pet leashed, hydrated, and safe-you and your four-legged friend can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the New River Gorge while respecting the park's ecosystem.
