Rend Trail Details
The Rend Trail is a 3.4-mile (5.47 km) one-way trail that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. Rated as easy, the trail is ideal for hikers of all ages and skill levels, making it a fantastic option for families, beginner mountain bikers, or anyone looking for a relaxing, scenic adventure in New River Gorge National Park & Preserve. The trail follows a historic railroad route originally built in 1906 to transport coal from the mines in Minden to the main line tracks in Thurmond. Although the rail line was abandoned in 1972, the path now serves as a gateway to the region's beautiful landscapes. The trail crosses five old railroad trestles, offering spectacular views of Dunloup Creek, the New River, and the historic town of Thurmond. Along the way, you'll also pass several scenic overlooks, which provide perfect photo opportunities or a moment to pause and enjoy the views. As you walk, you'll notice remnants of the past-such as the foundations of the town of South Boyd, which once thrived along the route. You'll also spot Arbuckle Creek paralleling the trail near the Minden end, adding an extra element of natural beauty to the experience. Though the trail is mostly flat and easy to navigate, there are a few areas of historical significance that make this trail truly special. The closed bridges (due to structural damage) slightly limit bikers from completing the full trail, but it remains accessible for hikers.
