Thurmond Depot Details

The Thurmond Depot, built in 1904 by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, was once the heart of a booming railroad town in West Virginia. During the early 20th century, Thurmond thrived as a major coal transportation hub, handling up to 95,000 passengers annually. The steady flow of freight and travelers brought prosperity, fueling the growth of hotels, banks, and businesses that catered to railroad workers and coal industry professionals. The depot's two-story design supported both passenger and railroad operations. The first floor provided ticketing, waiting areas, and baggage services, while the second floor housed dispatchers, conductors, and telegraph operators who managed train movements. This made Thurmond a critical control point within the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway network. As diesel locomotives replaced steam engines and coal production declined, Thurmond's significance faded. By the mid-1980s, the depot ceased operations, but the National Park Service later restored it as a visitor center for New River Gorge and Preserve. Since reopening in 1995, the depot has showcased the town's rich railroad history through exhibits and period furnishings. Today, it remains an active Amtrak station, allowing visitors to experience a piece of living history in the heart of the gorge.
