Bicycling at New River Gorge Details
Bicycling at the park offers riders a chance to explore its stunning landscapes, whether they're seeking a relaxing ride or an adrenaline-filled mountain biking adventure. With over 21 miles of designated trails, the park provides diverse terrain ranging from gentle forest paths to more challenging routes winding through rugged terrain and historic sites. The Arrowhead Trails system is one of the premier biking areas in the park. Built in 2011 by over 1,000 volunteers from the Boy Scouts of America's Order of the Arrow, this 12.8-mile network features four interconnected loops designed to accommodate varying skill levels. Riders can enjoy scenic views of the Craig's Branch area while navigating trails that range from beginner-friendly to moderately challenging. Other trails open to traditional bicycles include the Kaymoor, Craig Branch, Fayetteville, and Rend Trails, each offering unique experiences through lush woodlands, steep ridges, and remnants of the region's coal-mining history. E-bikes are currently only permitted on the Stonecliff Trail, ensuring a balance between recreational use and the park's conservation efforts. To protect the trails and ensure a safe experience for all, cyclists should yield to pedestrians and horseback riders, maintain a controlled speed, and follow Leave No Trace principles. Checking with visitor centers for updated trail conditions is also recommended, as weather and maintenance can impact accessibility.
