West Elwha Trail Details
This pleasant, albeit very muddy, trail in the heart of the Elwha River Valley allows access to the lush, vibrant ecosystem that is created by the river. Traveling through a young Douglas fir forest, the trail parallels the river for a while before heading into a vast maple grove lined with a vast array of ferns, wildflowers, and unique mushrooms. The dense trees begin to thin as the trail begins to gently ascend over a small hillside to a bluff overlooking the river, from which bear, dear, and elk area often sighted along the riverbanks downstream. The trail continues, re-entering forest, and eventually ends on Herrick Road just outside the park limits.
