North Fork Skokomish River Trail Details
This popular alternative to the longer, but more scenic Staircase Rapids Trail begins on an old graded road in the lowlands, surrounded by majestic old Douglas firs, hemlocks, and maple vines. The trail works its way in and out of the river valley floor, traveling through an area burnt by the Beaver Fire of 1985; a 19th-century copper, iron, and manganese mine; and avalanche slopes around the First Divide. The ascent over the Divide is the most strenuous part of the trail, but its northern slopes yield good views of Mount Skokomish, Hooper, and Steel, While Mountain, and Mount Lacrosse. The trail descends from the summit to a junction with the Duckabush River Trail.
