Horseback Riding Details
Horseback riding is a unique and exciting way to experience North Cascades National Park, and there are plentiful riding trails throughout the park. The area around Bridge Creek in the southern section of the park, the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, and the west side of Ross Lake are home to the most popular trails. Day and overnight riding trips can be had throughout the park. If you wish to explore by horseback, there are a number of rules and regulations to consider while planning your adventure. Horses, mules, donkeys, and llamas are allowed on trails, but are not permitted in the tenting areas of campgrounds. Many backcountry campsites are suitable for animals, but these require backcountry permits. Hitches are often located near trailheads and campsites; highlines are recommended in areas without hitches. Picketing and grazing are strictly prohibited in most areas, but grazing permits for the Lake Chelan meadows are available from ranger stations and visitor centers. Always check water availability prior to departing, and be prepared to store animal food in bear-resistant containers for the safety of both you and your animals. Please carry a rake to scatter dung, particularly around campsites, and be mindful of other visitors who may not know how to act around horses and other stock animals.
