Sunrise Rim Trail Details
This 5.2-mile, loop trail features a 1,000-foot elevation gain. Hikers can choose from a leisurely hike to Shadow Lake or continue on a moderately strenuous hike to the Burroughs Mountains. The trail offers great views of Mt. Rainier and Emmons Glacier, and during the park's spectacular wildflower season, surrounding meadows are filled with flowers. The trail begins on the south side of Sunrise parking lot, and shortly after beginning, hikers will come to a junction and should stay right. The trail begins easy and arrives at Shadow Lake 1.3 miles in. Looking north from here hikers can see the Sourdough Ridge. The trail continues on at a moderate incline to Glacier Overlook, which offers another great view. The grade becomes even steeper from here on as the trail progresses past the tree line and enters the tundra-like scenery of the Burroughs Mountains. From the top of First Burroughs Mountain, hikers can continue to the top of Second Burroughs, an additional 400 feet of elevation gain.
