Mountaineering Details
As the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States, Mount Rainier offers lots of opportunities for climbing and mountaineering. Each year, thousands of people successfully climb the 14,410-foot active volcano. To get to the summit, hikers will experience an elevation gain of more than 9,000 feet over a distance of eight or more miles, so anyone attempting to do so should be in prime physical shape. Conditions can change rapidly, so make sure to stay current on the weather forecast. Anyone attempting to climb in the winter (September to mid-May) should be experienced with winter mountaineering as well as with the intended routes for ascent and descent. The maximum size for a winter hiking party is 12; four is the recommended minimum. For much more on climbing in Mount Rainier, including information on passes, permits, regulations and equipment, check the NPS site [here](http://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/climbing.htm).
