Climbing Details

Thousands of people climb Mount Rainier each year, an arduous undertaking during which climbers gain more than 9,000 feet in eight or more miles. Anyone hiking above 10,000 feet or on any glaciers must obtain a climbing pass, which is $32 annually for those 24 and younger or $45 for anyone 25 and older. Climbers must also get a free Wilderness Permit; one permit is good for a group of up to 12 people, per climb; alternatively, you can pay $20 to reserve a permit in advance. In the summertime, passes are available at Paradise (the Climbing Information Center, 360-569-6641; or the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center, 360-569-6571), the White River Wilderness Information Center (360-569-6670), the Longmire Wilderness Information Center (360-569-6650), or the Carbon River Ranger Station (360-829-9639). In the winter, climbers can self-register at the Paradise Ranger Station. Only experienced climbers should attempt to summit Mount Rainier.
