Skyline Drive Details
Shenandoah's scenic thoroughfare, Skyline Drive, is the park's only public road and offers 105 miles of pristine landscapes. Built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Skyline Drive has been designated as a National Scenic Byway. The drive typically takes about three hours to complete from end to end; however visitors, should plan for more time to include extra stops and activities. Skyline Drive grants visitors access to all park facilities, including visitor centers, trailheads, picnic areas, and lodging. Skyline Drive is accessible at four different points: from Front Royal near Rt. 66 and 340; from Thornton Gap at Rt. 211; from Swift Run Gap at Rt. 33; and from Rockfish Gap at Rt. 64 and Rt. 250. Mileposts mark distance along the road and are essential for navigating points of interest and activities; all park maps and information reference mileposts for navigation. Milepost zero is at Front Royal in the north; milepost 105 is at the southernmost point of the road near Waynesboro, Va.
