Overview Details
Home of the famous Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park stretches more than 100 miles along the ridgeline overlooking the Shenandoah River Valley in Virginia. The twisting road, with spectacular views around nearly every bend, runs from Front Royal in the north to Rockfish Gap in the south, where it connects with the similarly scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Those who pull over and venture out to explore beyond the road will discover more than 500 miles of hiking trails within the park's vast wilderness areas, including a long segment of the Appalachian Trail. Some favorites include hikes to Stony Man Mountain and Dark Hollow Falls. Settled for centuries prior to the park's establishment in the 1920s and '30s, the park contains the remains of former homesites and farms as well as the restored summer White House of President Herbert Hoover. Lodging options include campsites, lodges, and lean-tos along the Appalachian Trail. Established: May 22, 1926 Area: 199,045.23 acres Website: [www.nps.gov/shen](http://www.nps.gov/shen)
