The Harry F. Byrd, Sr., Visitor Center is the park's southernmost visitor center, located at mile marker 51 along Skyline Drive. The center operates on weekends only during the winter months, and then opens full time spring-fall and offers restrooms, an information desk, ranger programs, publications, maps, and backcountry permits. Byrd Visitor Center is open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m daily during the high season (spring through fall). The visitor center has restrooms, an information desk, interactive exhibits, as well as informational publications and backcountry permits. Big Meadows Lodge lies across the road from the visitor center.
