Tarantulas Details
Although tarantulas are constantly present in Zion National Park, they are rarely seen except during the early fall, which is their mating season. Male tarantulas are usually seen crossing roads or trails while looking for mates. Because they are unusually susceptible to attack while they are out of their protective underground burrows, tarantulas can be more inclined to defend themselves by biting anyone who tries to pick them up or handle them. Although bites are not lethal, allergic reactions are fairly common, and the punctures can easily become infected. Like all Zion National Park wildlife, treat all tarantulas respectfully, and try to avoid disturbing them.
