Tarantula Hawks (Insect) Details
Also known as Pepsis Wasps, these large wasps native to Zion National Park can deliver stings that are considered the second most painful in the world. Marked by blue-black bodies and bright red-colored wings, these insects seldom attack humans without provocation, preferring the female tarantula as its victim. Stings, which are rare, generally occur when visitors try to catch these large, attractive wasps while they hover around blooming flowers. Although the stings are ultimately harmless in the long run, recipients will experience excruciatingly severe pain for a while.
