Rattlesnakes Details
There are 13 species of snakes found in Zion National Park, but only one, the Western Rattlesnake, is poisonous. Some visitors may confuse the Sonoran mountain kingsnake for a poisonous coral snake, however the latter is completely harmless, and coral snakes do not live in the park. Snakes tend to avoid human interaction, hiding in crevices and rocks at the sound of footsteps, but snakebites are not unheard of among park visitors. Although most people fear that snakes will bite them on the ankle as they pass by, most bites occur when snakes are picked up or touched. Like all Zion National Park wildlife, treat all snakes respectfully, and try to avoid disturbing them.
