Plants Details
The arid environment of Zion supports a surprisingly diverse array of plant life. Below 5,000 feet of elevation, you'll find abundant pinyon and juniper, while deciduous trees like the Fremont cottonwood, box elder, and velvet ash grow along the Virgin River. At Weeping Rock and along the Riverside Walk you'll find hanging gardens fed by water seeping from vertical rock walls. Zion is home to 14 varieties of cactus, which bloom colorfully in May and June, as well as abundant populations of the sacred detura, known for its beautiful white blossoms and nicknamed the "Zion lilly."
