A variety of topography, geology, elevations and precipitation along Capitol Reef's Waterpocket Fold has created a diversity of microhabitats and niches for plant species. Seventeen geologic formations are exposed within the Fold, each with a unique combination of minerals, soil types, aspect, and slope. Elevations in the park vary as well, from less than 4,000 feet in the south near Hall's Creek to over 11,000 feet in the north near Thousand Lakes Mountain, which means increasing annual precipitation from the south to the north end of the park. Because of the widely varying elevation, precipitation, geology and topography, a total of 887 plant species occur in the park, many of which occur only in specific areas. The park also features more than 40 rare and endemic plant species, six of which are federally listed as threatened or endangered. Common plants include juniper and pinyon trees, Indian paintbrush, Utah penstemon, Harriman's yucca, and claretcup cactus.
