The Fruita Orchards Details
Orchards have bloomed in Fruita practically since the town was founded, starting in the 1880s. A rare combination of ample water, sunlight and fertile soil made this desert community something of a local paradise, and even today visitors come to Capitol Reef National Park to share Fruita's bounty. The Fruita Orchards contain a total of more than 3,100 trees in 19 orchards located in the Historic District, including apple, pear, cherry, peach, plum, mulberry, almond, and walnut. Park visitors are welcome to pick ripe individual pieces of fruit from any unlocked orchard, but if you want to fill a basket you'll have to wait until harvest time. There are fees for gathering fruit in bulk. Ladders and hand-held fruit pickers are provided, but climbing the fruit trees is prohibited. Here's when trees flower: - Cherries: March 31-April 19 - Apricots: Feb. 27-March 20 (early); March 7-April 13 (regular) - Peaches: March 26-April 23 - Pears: March 31-May 3 - Apples: April 10-May 6 And here's when fruit is ready to harvest: - Cherries: June 11-July 7 - Apricots: June 27-July 22 (early); June 28-July 18 (regular) - Peaches: Aug. 4-Sept. 6 - Pears: Aug. 7-Sept. 8 - Apples: Sept. 4-Oct. 17
