Backcountry Information Details
Other than the park's developed area around Fruita, most of Capitol Reef's 378 square miles could be considered backcountry, filled with slot canyons, high desert, gorges, and views of the Waterpocket Fold. The park is long and narrow, covering 100 miles from north to south. The Fruita area bisects the park into roughly a northern third and southern two-thirds. The northern section is home to the popular hiking destination, Cathedral Valley, and the primitive campground there. The Waterpocket Fold takes up most of the southern portion of the park and there is primitive camping at the Cedar Mesa Campground. There are a number of backcountry hiking routes, and backcountry horseback riding is allowed as well. Marked hiking routes tour gorges and slot canyons, as well as offering viewpoints over the Waterpocket Fold. Popular backcountry hikes in the southern section of the park include Upper and Lower Muley Twist Canyons and Halls Creek. If bringing horses into the park or planning a backcountry hiking trip, remember to pick up a free permit at the visitor center before you go. There is no water in the backcountry, so plan ahead and pack out everything you pack in.
