Auto Touring Details
Capitol Reef National Park, only a few miles wide but 100 miles long, showcases not only the beauty of the Waterpocket Fold, but also the area's human history, stretching back to petroglyphs dating from 1300 CE, right up to the last pioneer family, who left the area in 1969. With 378 square miles, the park can keep visitors busy for days. It was established as a National Monument in 1937, and a National Park in 1971. Much of park land is backcountry, filled with gorges and slot canyons, but even the most casual visitor should take the 8-mile (one-way) scenic drive, which starts at the Visitor Center and features two scenic overlooks as well as multiple pull-outs. The northern, more remote section of the park includes the spectacular Cathedral Valley. Summer daytime temperatures can top out over 100 degrees, and although this is a popular time to visit the park, the spring and fall are more temperate. The park's one developed campground at Fruita frequently fills early in busy times, so arrive early if you're planning on staying overnight. Animal residents of the park include 15 reptile species, five kinds of amphibians, 71 species of mammals, 239 species of birds and 13 native fish. Habitats range from pinyon-juniper forests to perennial streams, dry washes, and rock cliffs. The park offers backcountry camping and hiking, as well 15 day-hiking trails near Fruita, which deserves exploration in its own right. Check out the Fruita Historic District, which includes the Gifford House Store and Museum as well as the Fruita Schoolhouse.
