Safety Details

Visiting Canyonlands National Park is an extraordinary adventure that immerses you in vast landscapes of breathtaking canyons, towering mesas, and remarkable rock formations. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, it's crucial to be aware of the park's unique conditions and prepare accordingly. Here are essential safety tips to consider: 1. Prepare for the Desert Environment Hydration is Key: The desert climate means it can get extremely hot, especially in summer. Carry and consume at least one gallon of water per person per day. Dehydration can happen quickly, even before you feel thirsty. Protect Yourself from the Sun: Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants can also provide protection against the sun's rays. Recognize Heat Exhaustion Symptoms: These include headache, nausea, dizziness, and muscle cramps. If you or someone with you starts feeling these symptoms, seek shade, drink water, and rest immediately. 2. Be Weather Wise Check Weather Forecasts: Weather in the desert can change rapidly. Be aware of the forecast for the entire duration of your visit. Beware of Flash Floods: Avoid slot canyons and washes during rainy weather, as flash floods can occur with little warning. Prepare for Cold: Even if the days are hot, nights can be cold, especially outside of summer months. Bring layers to accommodate temperature swings. 3. Navigate Safely Stay on Designated Trails: This protects both the park's fragile soil and vegetation and also ensures you don't get lost. Many areas of Canyonlands have cryptobiotic soil crust that is vital to the desert ecosystem and can be damaged by footsteps. Use Maps and Compasses: While GPS devices are helpful, always carry a physical map and compass as backups. Know how to use them. Plan Your Route: Especially in remote areas like The Maze, routes can be confusing, and rescues are difficult. Let someone know your plans and expected return time. 4. Drive Responsibly 4WD Roads: Many of the park's roads require high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles. Ensure your vehicle is capable and you have the necessary driving skills. Carry Emergency Supplies: Include extra water, food, a spare tire, and emergency tools in your vehicle. 5. Respect Wildlife Keep a Safe Distance: Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not feed or approach animals, as this can be dangerous and disrupts their natural behaviors. Store Food Securely: To avoid attracting wildlife to your campsite, store food and trash securely. 6. Leave No Trace Pack Out Trash: Keep the park pristine for future visitors by packing out all your trash, including organic waste like fruit peels and nut shells. Camp in Designated Areas: When backcountry camping, use established sites to minimize impact. 7. Emergency Preparedness Carry a First Aid Kit: Always have a basic first aid kit with you and know how to use it. Know Emergency Contacts: Have the park's emergency numbers saved in your phone and written down somewhere accessible.
