Green River Details

Beginning in the Wind River Range in Wyoming, the Green River travels 730 miles before the confluence with the Colorado River in Canyonlands. The Fremont Tribe populated much of the river drainage from approximately 700-1300 AD before they mysteriously left the region. Since then the Ute and Shoshone people lived along the river before being driven out by explorers from other parts of the world. In the late 1800's Mormon settlers established the town of Vernal, Utah along the Green River, upstream from Canyonlands. Today, the Green River is heavily used for tourism. Mineral deposits and oil shale drilling in the watershed contribute to the economy of the state. The river provides cool and verdant recreation for canoeists and kayakers within the park boundaries.
