Ranger Led Programs Details
Each month, on the one or two nights when the moon is full, Rangers lead small groups of Bryce visitors on a unique one- to two-mile hike into the canyon to view the park's dramatic hoodoos bathed in moonlight. It's an unforgettable experience, but not for everyone, since the hike takes place on steep, rocky trails and participants are not allowed to bring flashlights or headlamps. The number of hikers is understandably limited for safety reasons: a daily lottery for hike tickets is held at 4 p.m. in the Bryce Canyon Lodge Auditorium. Those holding winning numbers can bring up to six people on the hike, but all hikers must be present at the lottery to get their hike tickets. Children under age 6 are not permitted on full-moon hikes. Hikers must have hiking boots or shoes with lug soles, and are advised to bring drinking water and a jacket even for summer hikes. This hike is not handicapped-accessible. The full-moon hikes are offered year-round, but from November to March hikers descend into the canyon on snowshoes (when there's at least a foot of snow on the ground). The park will provide the snowshoes and poles, but you need to bring your own waterproof hiking boots or snow boots. Participation in snowshoe hikes is limited to 25 people. For more information, check at the Visitor Center or call (435) 834-4747.
