Hiking Details

Unlike the Grand Canyon, it doesn't take great stamina or experience to enjoy the best of Bryce Canyon: visitors of most abilities can follow a variety of day-hiking trails into the heart of majestic Bryce Amphitheater and walk among the park's mysterious "hoodoos." There are several routes into the canyon starting from the major rim overlooks, and once you're down in the canyon many of the trails connect with each other, meaning you can combine trails to meet your individual schedule and ability level. Trails are categorized as easy, moderate, and strenuous. Remember, though: what goes down must come up, so any hike into the canyon will necessitate a climb back out. (The Rim Trail is the best alternative for those who want a less-strenuous hike.) And because the park is at 9,000 feet, visitors who are not used to the elevation may find themselves more winded than usual. Park rangers recommend that all hikers: * Wear hiking boots with good lug traction and ankle support. * Carry one quart of water per person for every 2-3 hours of hiking * Yield to horses and mules you may encounter on the trails. (Hiking clockwise reduces your chances of encountering horses/mules.) * Stay on maintained trails; do not use "social" trails. * Be respectful of other visitors by keeping noise levels down while you hike. * Do not feed wildlife. * Be responsible about your own safety. Note: pets are only allowed on paved trails and viewpoints, such as the section of the Rim Trail between Sunset and Sunrise points. No pets are permitted below the canyon rim.
