The lands protected by the [Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument](http://www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/grand_staircase-escalante.html) are intimately tied to Bryce Canyon: both are part of the Grand Staircase, a series of stepped plateaus created by tectonic uplift millions of years ago. The scale of the events that created the Grand Staircase are truly awesome, including raising the land by 5,000 to 10,000 feet over thousands of square miles. Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument alone is more than 2,900 square miles, stretching from the border with Bryce Canyon National Park to to the west to Glen Canyon in the east. Hiking, climbing, camping, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, off-roading and river running are among the activities that visitors can enjoy here.
