Odessa Meteor Crater Details

This impressive crater site was formed 64,000 years ago during the prehistoric era when iron octahedrite meteorites fell from the sky. There are numerous crevices and craters scattered around this 10-acre site, making it the third-largest meteor crater area in the country. The largest crater is 550-feet wide and 15-feet deep, although it was originally believed to be over 100-feet deep when the meteor struck before erosion and sand-filled in the hole. Over the last few years, geologists have uncovered over 1,500 meters in the area, including a rock that weighs over 300 pounds.
