Mother Neff State Park Details
Situated on the banks of the Leon River, this park is a paradise of canyons, prairies, and wildflower fields. Due to its riverside location, the park has experienced its fair share of flooding over the past few years, which is why the visitor center and main hiking loop were relocated above the floodplain in 2015 Although the current park was officially founded in 1937, its history dates back to 1916, when Isabella Eleanor Neff (the mother of then-governor Pat Morris Neff) donated 6-acres to start the very first national park in Texas. After an additional donation of 253 acres to the land, the park opened its doors to the public in 1937. The park is a great place for hiking, with 3.5 miles of trails suitable for all types of trekkers. If you'd prefer to spend a few days, then you can stay overnight at one of the 20 RV hookup sites or 15 tented campsites.
