Lake Whitney State Park Details
Ideal for day trips or overnight adventures, this park is known for its exciting outdoor activities. It's located directly on the shores of Lake Whitney, a reservoir on the southern part of the Brazos River 75 miles south of Dallas. The lake itself is part of the Texas Lakes Trail Region of North Texas. The lake was formed in 1951 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a 166-foot high dam on the southern part of the river. This was made to protect Waco and other south Texas communities from potential river flooding. In 1954, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department rented part of the land around the lake and opened up the park approximately 11 years later. The park is known for its diverse wildlife, on water and on land. Catfish, bass, wild turkeys, eagles, white-tailed deer, and armadillos are just a few creatures you might run into. There are numerous places to hike and cycle, as well as campsites and shelters for overnight stays. Entrance Fees - Adult: $5 Daily - Child 12 Years and Under: Free Reservations are available [online] (https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/lake-whitney-state-park/r/facilityDetails.do?contractCode=TX&parkId=1200102&_ga=2.22362046.447085507.1618845916-917412064.1616861417) or by calling (512) 389-8900
