Fort Davis National Historic Site Details
Fort Davis, a 19th-century frontier Army post in West Texas, has a fascinating history. Established in 1854 in the Davis Mountains, the fort stood watch over the Trans-Pecos part of the San Antonio-El Paso Road and the Chihuahua Trail, as well as monitoring nearby Comanche and Apache war trails. During its occupation by Confederate soldiers during the U.S. Civil War, the fort was attacked by Mescalero Apaches; later, it housed African-American "Buffalo Soldiers" before being decommissioned in 1891. Fort Davis National Historic Site visitors can tour one of the best-preserved frontier forts in the West, including dozens of stone and adobe structures restored to their mid-19th century appearance and myriad ruins and building foundations.
