Balmorhea State Park Details
The largest spring-fed swimming pool in the world is the main attraction at this park - with over 15 million gallons of water flowing each day from the San Solomon Springs. Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park is literally an oasis in the high desert. The springs have long been used by humans and animals with documented signs of use dating back 11,000 years. Previously called Mescalero Springs for the Mescalero Apache who watered their horses here. The current name comes from four men's surnames: E.D. Balcom, H.R. Morrow, Joe Rhea and John Rhea: Bal-mor-hea. These four men formed an irrigation company in the area in the early 20th century. Swimming is the primary focus of this park however there is no lifeguard on duty. The pool is up to 25 feet deep, covers 1.3-acres, and holds 3.5 million gallons of water. The water temperature stays at 72 to 76 degrees year-round. There are 34 campsites available and several picnic tables. There are several endangered species that call the spring home: the Comanche Spring pupfish and the Pecos gambusia. Birders will find colorful songbirds in summer and overwintering waterfowl during colder months.
