Overview Details
Once an ancient underwater reef, the Guadalupe Mountains now tower more than 8,000 feet above the Chihuahuan Desert, forming one of the most dramatic landscapes in West Texas. Established on October 15, 1966, Guadalupe Mountains National Park protects 86,415.97 acres of rugged peaks, desert lowlands, and sky-high limestone cliffs, and the best way to experience it is on foot, with 80+ miles of hiking trails winding through canyons, ridgelines, and fossil-rich stone. Hikers can take on the park's signature challenge: the 8.4-mile round-trip climb to Guadalupe Peak (8,749 feet), the highest point in Texas. For something shorter but still adventurous, Devil's Hall delivers a rugged canyon hike with rock scrambling, while McKittrick Canyon offers an easier, more popular walk through a classic desert-to-woodland corridor. For a deep dive into the park's origins, the Permian Reef Trail packs a punch, gaining roughly 2,000 feet in 4.2 miles and showcasing the geology that once sat beneath a prehistoric sea. The park's main hub is the Pine Springs area, home to the visitor center and the Pine Springs Campground, near the historic Pinery, a former Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach stop. Farther afield, Dog Canyon is a quieter, more remote section of the park, about a 120-mile drive from the visitor center, beloved by backpackers but also offering rewarding day hikes. Beyond the trails, visitors can explore abandoned ranch sites, marvel at the surreal Salt Basin Dunes, and enjoy activities like horseback riding, birding, and stargazing in this aptly nicknamed "Island in the Desert."
