Tree & Plants Details
Big Bend National Park is home to over 1,000 species of plants, despite the arid desert climate. Some of the most successful desert plants are the cacti and succulents that have adapted to require only the smallest amount of water to survive. In order to photosynthesize, cacti and succulents absorb carbon dioxide at night in order to reserve as much water as they can. Shrubs and desert sage are sprinkled throughout the park, but the leafy green trees can only be found in the infrequent oases that persist in the desert conditions. Though it may be surprising, there are many species of wildflower that thrive in the varied terrain that Big Bend has to offer. Most bloom between February and April, however, the summer rains bring about another burst of color in July and August.
